Another spectacular vista from the road.
As we crossed Norway and descend to ocean level at Stavanger, we drove by manylakes that rest gently between the mountains. Norway, we've decided, is the land of tunnels. Imagine... we're traveling to the right in this picture and will always stay within a few meters of the water...Where will we actually be driving? You're right! In the mountainside itself! In a tunnel in the dark part of the photo on the right. We must have passed through 30 tunnels as we crossed Norway from Oslo to Stavanger.
Finally we descended to sea level in western Norway. We had two ferries to ride before we arrived in Stavanger. The cross country highway was two lanes all the way and included two ferries. The photo below shows the second ferry that took us to our rest stop for the night - Stavanger.
Oh, no! The boat is going to eat us!!!!
Just kidding! The ferries are so efficient. The arrivers are off within a few minutes and the departers are on just as quickly. The guy in the boat in the foreground was waiting for a friend (or relative) arriving on the ferry. As soon as his party de-ferried, they stepped aboard the skiff and off they went.
Bill and Karen stayed on deck to enjoy the delightful 20 minute ride across the fjord to Stavanger.
Stavanger is a beautiful cosmopolitan city. Rather than hit the nightclubs, we walked around the city center lake (pond) at 11:00 pm.
